About us

Posta Bazar, a wholesale commodity market, came into being existence in the mid nineteenth century when India was still under the British Rule. Primarily it was used as a Stocking Market, being situated beside the river Hooghly. The trading at that time was solely conducted through river line transportation system. Calcutta, being the principal city of British administration, was flourishing and developing fast as a commercial hub of Eastern India. Posta was rapidly becoming a vast commercial market serving as a distribution point for Eastern India comprising of – Bengal, Bangladesh, upper and lower Assam, Andaman & Nicobar, Bihar and Orissa. Proximity to the Calcutta Port was its added advantage and with the introduction  of Railways in early twentieth century, potential of Posta Market grew and it became the main commercial market in the entire Eastern India dealing in food items. Rice in particularly contributed to its growth as new areas in the hinterland of South Bengal flourished rapidly. By the mid twentieth century, Posta market commanded the whole of the Eastern India in the business of essential food commodities and became the biggest such market in terms of quantity, variety, and transaction value. It still holds its place today as the prime market of Pulses, Edible & Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Flour, Salt, Groundnut, Gur, Wheat Products, Chira, Lime and Iron & Steel.

The Posta Bazar Merchant’s Association was formed and registered as the prime governing body of this market on 13th June 1973 having registration No. S13105 of 1973-74 by Registrar of Firms, Societies, Non- trading Corp, WB with the objects to promote, develop and protect the art and science related to sales and management , to encourage friendly and co-operative feelings amongst the persons engaged in the wholesale and retail business , to r egulate terms & conditions in establishment and workshop etc, to promote good relations between employers and employees , to urge, support , propose of lawful means legislation and other measures and to procure change of law and practice offering trade, business and industries related to wholesale and retail business, to collect, preserve and circulate statics information related to trade, Commerce and industries specially those related to wholesale and retail business, to adjust controversies or dispute and to arbitrate or provide arbitrators for the settlement of dispute in connection with trade and industry, specially wholesale, retail business and to appoint or engage lawyers and law officers or any other specially qualified persons, if considered necessary, to defend the interests of its members in all courts of law or before Tribunals and other bodies and institutions as and when necessary, to protect the interest of the members against any monopolistic complain of supplies of consumer products to persons dealing in trade and business of consumer products , to render mutual assistance on technical and Industrial problems and to make representations to Government departments and officials in connection with any kind of difficulty experienced by all or any particular member, to provide facilities for social intercourse between the members of the Association and their friends, to send good-will trade delegations missions to various part of country and to foreign countries for the promotion and development of trade and business , to conciliate or help in conciliation of labour dispute in member unit by joint discussion, consultation, directly with labour unions or Tribunals, to communicate with Chamber of Commerce and to promote measure for protection of persons engaged in the trade and business of consumer products with limited liabilities of members. The core governing body of this Association consists of 40 Executive Committee Members having expertise in various fields, meeting of Executive Committee Meeting held every months and Annual General Meeting held every year- apart from Executive Committee, their are 10 (ten) different sub committee (Cells) like Labour, Pulses, Edible Oil, Atta Maida, Rice, Salt, Iron, Ground Nutt and Lime which take care of day to day affairs in these particular line items. Representative of The Posta Bazar Merchants’ Association is also the member of the Task Force of Government of West Bengal , Chairman of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) West Bengal Chapter and so many organisation. The Posta Bazar Merchants’ Association is the member of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Federation of West Bengal Trade Association and Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). Approximately 600 wholesale shop owners, 10000 labours and over 9000 employees families are dependent on our Posta Bazar. The Posta Bazar Merchants’ Association also runs a Charitable Trust in the name of The Posta Bazar Merchants Association Charity Trust for giving relief to the poorer section of the community in way of medical help, educational help, marriage help, organising food distribution camp, cloth distribution camp, free health check up camp, free blood donation camp, free vaccination camp and has been always very active during natural calamities in the country and more than 50 social service events done in a year.
